We’re hoping for an eventful title race this season, plus a fierce battle for the European and places and – who knows – maybe an exciting relegation battle too.

Too much to ask? Here are six key things from the schedule.

Liverpool and Man Utd runs, Saints false starters

Liverpool (v Fulham) will face a promoted team on the opening day for the fourth season in a row, a Premier League record, while Manchester United (v Brighton) will start at home for the sixth season in a row.

The opening day is less convenient for Southampton, who are winless in their last eight and have lost all three under Ralph Hasenhüttl. They travel to Tottenham. On the other side of the coin, Everton are unbeaten in 10 opening day games, the longest run in the league.

Haaland off to a stormer?

Erling Haaland scored four goals in two opening day appearances during his time at Borussia Dortmund. A trip to West Ham may not be so fruitful but Man City then don’t face a side that finished in last season’s top half in any of their next five matches.

He could be well on his way to the Golden Boot by the middle of September.

The new boys

Nottingham Forest’s first game in the top flight in 23 years sees them visit Newcastle and they have a thrilling few days after Christmas as they visit Old Trafford on Boxing Day and then host Chelsea on New Year’s Eve.

Fulham’s start is tricky, with the Cottagers taking on Liverpool (H), Arsenal (A), Tottenham (A) and Chelsea (H) all in their opening seven games.

And Bournemouth don’t have it easy either, visiting Man City and Liverpool either side of hosting Arsenal all before the end of August.

Man Utd’s month of madness

With the World Cup coming up in November, games have been crammed into October (six matches) and April (also six matches) but nobody has a trickier run than Manchester United.

October will see Erik ten Hag’s side play a Manchester derby before playing Everton, Newcastle, Tottenham, Chelsea and West Ham.

Festive fun!

We all love the Christmas period. This one comes after a World Cup and has served us Arsenal v West Ham on Boxing Day and then Chelsea v Man City on 2 January.

All on the line in April

Liverpool fans will be eyeing up the 1 April trip to Manchester City and thinking if they can be top of the table after that, they’re on to something. But it won’t be easy. The Reds still have to play Arsenal, West Ham and Spurs over the following four weeks.

The rest of City’s April looks a bit kinder but the late visit of Chelsea on the penultimate day could be a spanner in the title race works.
