Ratcliffe has been seeking a lesser stake in the club after both he and Qatar’s Sheikh Jassim failed to secure a full takeover.

“Whilst the commercial success of the club has ensured there have always been available funds to win trophies at the highest level, this potential has not been fully unlocked in recent times,” he stated.

“We are here for the long term and recognise that a lot of challenges and hard works lies ahead, which we will approach with rigour, professionalism and passion. We all want to see United back where we belong at the very top of English, European and world football.”

INEOS will also be delegated responsibility for all of the club’s football operations and in addition, he has pledged $300m for future investment in Old Trafford.

A boyhood Red Devils’ fan, the 71-year-old is expected to enact a series of sporting changes in his new role at the Theatre of Dreams.
