Sir Bobby Charlton was delighted to support Manchester United Foundation’s latest community initiative to give away 650 footballs to young people across Greater Manchester.

Wellbeing packs will be donated to participants of the Foundation’s Street Reds programme, which include footballs to keep the kids active over the summer holidays.

A lot of kids are unable to see their friends and coaches due to the COVID-19 pandemic so this is a really good move from the foundation.

The packs also include Manchester United memorabilia, health and wellbeing information, and an activity calendar to keep participants busy with a new challenge each day throughout August.

“I’ve always followed the work of the Foundation closely and I’m so proud of the work they have done since the start of pandemic,” Manchester United legend Sir Bobby Charlton said. “The team has gone above and beyond to ensure the young people they work with are not forgotten and feel supported, despite sessions not running as normal.

“The Street Reds football giveaway is particularly close to my heart. Over the years I have said on many occasions that a football is the best toy ever invented, and it truly is. A football brings with it hours and hours of pleasure and I know the impact this gesture will have on the community.”

Street Reds is a programme offering the opportunity to learn new skills and gain qualifications in a supportive and positive environment. The whole foundation has been a credit to the club long before the pandemic and this is another example of their fantastic work.

There’s a feel good atmosphere all over the club at the moment. Not only are the players getting results, the club has took creation caution during this pandemic and it’s heart-warming to see.

Below you can listen to an interview with did with Manchester United Foundation chief executive John Shiels to talk about their tremendous work during the pandemic.
