Overview:
With a well respected head coach in charge like Wouter Vrancken, Sint Truiden fans will be hoping that this season will be more enjoyable than the previous one. The Canaries entertained but were defensively poor. With a few days to go till the season starts, they still have star striker Adriano Bertaccini. If he does leave, as he is expected to, Sint Truiden must find a way to replace him.
Transfers in: Ilias Sebaoui (Feyenoord), Illyes Benachour (Club Brugge), Kaito Matsuzawa (V-Varen Nagasaki), Louis Patris (Anderlecht), Taiga Hata (Shonan Bellmare), Abdoulaye Sissako (Kortrijk), Andres Ferrari (Villarreal), Ryan Merlen (RFC Liege)
Transfers out: Joel Chima Fujita (St Pauli), Ryoya Ogawa (Kashima Antlers), Tristan Teuchy (Dessel), Didier Lamkel Ze (free), Bruno Godeau (free)
Key player: Ilias Sebaoui
Presuming Bertaccini will be off, Sint Truiden will need other players to step up. Sebaoui burst onto the scene at Beerschot but has struggled since moving to the Netherlands. The attacker now returns to Belgium and with Sint Truiden he could really rebuild his career. If he showcases his talent in the right way, Sint Truiden could have picked up the signing of the season.
Young player to watch: Adam Nhali
Sint Truiden don’t have many players under the age of 21, but 19-year-old Adam Nhali was a bit part player last season. The winger may see more opportunities this season if Vrancken starts searching for a way to get the side scoring and being less reliant on Bertaccini. This will be his third season with the first team and could be the one where he begins to really have an impact.
Transfer window needs:
The defence looks light, especially given that the club have opted for three at the back in the past few seasons. They could do with more quality in central defence. The central midfield looks to be strong with the inclusion of Merlen and Sissako. Clearly, the big question mark is around the strikers. If they keep Bertaccini after the window closes then they have enough, but if he goes they will need to find another player for that position. Ferrari showed glimpses of what he could do, but Sint Truiden can’t rely on him to match Bertaccini’s 21 goals.
