Inter head coach Simone Inzaghi returns to the Stadio Olimpico to face his old side Lazio on Friday, and he does so more secure than ever in his current role as Nerazzurri boss.
This is noted in today’s print edition of Milan-based newspaper Gazzetta dello Sport, who highlight the transformation that has taken place in the little under twelve months since Inzaghi last returned to the Italian capital to face his old team.
The last time Inter faced Lazio away, they lost 3-1 in their first defeat under Inzaghi, a bitter reversal that came after they had gone 1-0 up in the first half, and the first indication that there was real work that needed to be done by the coach.
Inzaghi will be determined to avoid a similar result this time around regardless of sentimental attachments to the Biancocelesti, and to this end he comes back with a team that has more of his stamp on it.
When the coach came back to the Olimpico last October, he had been in his position at Inter for just a few months and the sense was that there were still growing pains as he moulded a team that had been built for Antonio Conte according to his own specifications.
Now, the coach has had time and several transfer windows to really make the squad his own, while the return of Romelu Lukaku gives him yet another resource that he did not have at his disposal the last time around.
Inzaghi has fashioned Inter into a different beast than what his Lazio team ever were, and early signs are that this season’s Nerazzurri team will not be the same as the last one’s.
The coach has learned to adapt to the environment of managing Inter compared to experiences with the Biancocelesti, including notably making his voice heard loud and clear in this summer’s transfer window.
Now, Inzaghi returns to the Stadio Olimpico once again for another litmus test of his Inter project up against a Lazio side who have themselves increasingly moved on from what they had been under him with new coach Maurizio Sarri.
