Schalke striker Simon Terodde has ended the season as the second division’s top goalscorer for the fourth time in his career – no player has ever managed this before in German professional football. Terodde’s goal to win the game at 1. FC Nürnberg on Sunday (15/5) was his 30th of the season, a new personal best for the legendary forward.

Terodde scored 25 goals in both 2015/16 for VfL Bochum and in 2016/17 for VfB Stuttgart. The third time he was top scorer was in 2018/19, when he netted 29 times for Köln. This is, however, the first time he’s got his hands on an actual trophy – presented to him by Toni Lieto from the kicker magazine. The top goalscorer never used to get a trophy in the second division, so Terodde is even happier to finish the season as the most prolific player once again.

Terodde’s record is really impressive, especially when you consider that he missed four games due to a muscle injury in the first half of the season. The striker only featured 30 times in 2021/22, scoring a goal on average every 86 minutes.

“My target was to reach 30 goals,” explained Terodde after the game. “I’m so happy that I was able to reach this goal. I would like to take the opportunity to thank my teammates, the coaches, the staff and everyone else that’s helped me along the way.” Although delighted with his individual award, Terodde’s was happier about winning promotion and the title with the rest of the lads.

The last player to reach the 30-goal mark in the second division was Sven Demandt in 1988/89 for Fortuna Düsseldorf (35 goals, although he played 38 games). The record is held by Horst Hrubesch, who scored an incredible 41 goals in 1977/78 for Rot-Weiss Essen.

Terodde has held a different 2. Bundesliga record for some months now. Schalke’s number nine broke Dieter Schatzschneider’s all-time goalscoring record earlier this season. He has now 172 goals to his name in the second division – a tally that he thankfully won’t improve on next season due to being in the top flight with the Royal Blues!
