Simon Jordan has defended the Watford owners after they made the decision to sack Rob Edwards after just ten league games.

It’s well-documented how the Pozzo family don’t give managers much time at Vicarage Road, but there had been talk this summer that Edwards would be given time to get things right.

However, that hasn’t been the case, with the former Forest Green boss dismissed yesterday as Slaven Bilic was named as his successor.

The decision to get rid of Edwards sparked plenty of debate within football, as many criticised the Hornets for not giving the rookie coach more time. Yet, talking on TalkSPORT, Jordan explained how the overall approach has brought relative success for the club.

It works for Watford in terms of they get up and down into the Premier League relatively regularly. And depends what you think their aspirations are and what they’re prepared to spend and what their model is.

But from a Watford point of view, what would you expect them to achieve? They don’t spend huge amounts of money in the transfer market. They don’t spend a huge amount of investment in the football club. They’ve got an ownership model where they don’t muck about.”

The verdict

You can understand Jordan’s point here as nobody can deny that since the current owners took over, it has generally been a very good period for the club.

Of course, that doesn’t mean they’re faultless though and the constant turnover of managers makes it hard for the fans to build a connection with whoever is in charge and perhaps the team as well.

Ultimately though, it’s now down to Bilic to do his best to get the team promoted and he will certainly feel he is inheriting a squad that is capable of going up.
