Diego Simeone hailed the Atletico Madrid fans cheering outside the stadium as they defeated Real Sociedad to stay clear at the top of the table.

Atletico managed to hold on for a vital 2-1 win over Real Sociedad on Wednesday, with Simeone's only disappointment being that his side had to suffer towards the end.

The hosts were rampant for the majority of the game but an Igor Zubeldia strike seven minutes from time set up a nervy finish.

"We knew we had to win against an opponent who are very good away from home," Simeone said in his post-match press conference.

"We had a great first half and even the second half as well, but in this finely balanced end of the season, and their goal, made us suffer unfairly in the last minutes."

Simeone was asked if he'd be watching Real Madrid take on Sevilla last week, to which he made clear that it would provoke too many nerves, and so he made it clear why he won't be tuning into Los Blancos' match against Granada.

"If I already said last week that I was nervous, imagine when it happens each week," he said.

"I prefer not to watch it and then find out what happened [after]."

Luis Suarez has now failed to score in his last five league games, but Simeone isn't concerned.

"For us, he is decisive, and for these two remaining games he will find what he is looking for," Simeone said.

"Football, in the long run, ends up rewarding effort and he is [putting in the effort]. In these two games he will come close to scoring."

Atletico fans could be heard cheering on the team outside the stadium, which moved the coach.

"[It was] emotional, listening to them sing from outside was emotional. I understand the Government, but since so many things have opened, I understand that the fans are needed," he said.

"There has to be an effort to see whether football can also have the audience that it needs."
