Signing a right-back should be a priority this summer for Manchester City

As Manchester City beat Nottingham Forest on Sunday at Wembley the move of Rico Lewis into midfield did catch the eye. Lewis showed that going forward, his future lies as a midfielder. With that in mind, it does appear that City must sign a right-back this summer. That will facilitate the permanent move of Rico Lewis into midfield for next season and beyond.

Looking at Pep Guardiola’s squad the summer needs that must be addressed are obvious. Adding creativity from midfield is a must. There is also a situation unfolding with the goalkeeper position that will also need to be addressed. Signing a left-back would facilitate the move of Josko Gvardiol to centre-back permanently. But signing a right-back could be just as crucial for Manchester City.

If a right-back is signed then Rico Lewis can move into midfield. He won’t be required to play the position. Matheus Nunes can provide cover for the position and Lewis can play where his game is best suited. Also, the move of Lewis into midfield could add more creativity to Manchester City’s midfield. The ability of Lewis in the pockets stood out against Nottingham Forest. He is also a smart player as his goal showed. Lewis also made a host of quality attacking runs on Sunday that weren’t rewarded. But he is a player who can add what Manchester City’s midfield has lacked at times this season.

Signing a right-back does loom as a move City must make this summer. Fraser Fletcher has previously reported for TeamTalk that Jeremie Frimpong is a potential target for Manchester City. Or perhaps moving Manuel Akanji into the position next season would work. But Rico Lewis should become a midfielder next season and improving the right-back position would allow Pep Guardiola to do this.
