The Baggies were expected to sanction the Republic of Ireland’s exit from The Hawthorns after agreeing a £5 million fee with the Brazilian giants, with it touted as being a life-changing move for the 26-year-old.

But it appears now that the dream is up in smoke, with Brazilian outlet Ge Global revealing that the club have pulled out of the transfer due to fan backlash - although it has been said that a deal isn't totally dead in the water for this summer.

This will be a major blow for Albion, who were set to receive all the money up front to ease their profit & sustainability concerns, while it’s yet to be revealed whether this latest development hinders their move for striker Aune Heggebø.

According to reports in Brazil, specifically, Ge Global, Mikey Johnston’s summer move to Flamengo has stalled.

It is believed to be because of fan backlash from Flamengo’s side to the move happening, with Johnston only recently being told about the developments.

While there has also been discontent shown by supporters, concerns have grown internally too, with strong names in the current management pressuring the club to go back on the agreement.

Flamengo alleges the history of injuries for their retreat too, although Johnston’s last problem came in 2022 at Celtic with an ankle issue.

The Express & Star has also commented on the transfer saga, confirming a stall has happened, but insisted that rumours of Johnston failing a medical are wide of the mark.

West Brom reporter Lewis Cox has tweeted that Johnston is relaxed about the situation and will now join his team-mates in Austria for their pre-season camp, as the Baggies prepare to take on Dynamo Kyiv.

Mikey Johnston transfer u-turn is a devastating blow for both West Brom and player

Mentioned as a life-changing move, Mikey Johnston will surely be devastated that a deal from Flamengo has fallen out of his grasp.

The attacker had said goodbye to his team-mates at West Brom’s training camp a few days ago and will now have to go back and fight for his place under Ryan Mason.

Meanwhile, the Baggies must be disappointed by how this has unfolded. The Black Country outfit were set to receive all the £5 million fee up front by selling Johnston, which would have really boosted them in their battle against P&S.

Now they will have to try and find another suitor for the Irishman, or identify another player to sell from their books, but there may not be one who would attract a better price than Johnston has other than Tom Fellows.

It is yet to be revealed whether this development impacts a move for Norwegian striker Aune Heggebo, who is believed to be in Austria to complete a medical.
