Burnley have agreed a deal with Swansea City for striker Michael Obafemi, according to journalist Mike McGrath.

Obafemi has been consistently linked with the Clarets this month, but following the arrival of Lyle Foster at Turf Moor from Westerlo in a deal reported to be worth £8 million, there were doubts over whether they would continue their pursuit of the out-of-favour Swansea front man.

But now McGrath has confirmed that the move is nearing completion, with Obafemi set to undergo a medical ahead of his switch to Turf Moor.

Journalist Alex Crook claims the deal for Obafemi will initially be a loan, with an obligation to buy for around £4 million.

Obafemi joined the Swans from Southampton last summer and enjoyed an excellent debut season at the Swansea.com Stadium, scoring 12 goals in 33 appearances in all competitions.

But Obafemi has been frozen out by Russell Martin in recent months and has not featured since prior to the World Cup break, while Martin has also criticised his attitude at times this campaign after failing to secure a move to Burnley in the summer.

Obafemi will join a Clarets side sitting top of the Championship table, five points clear of second-placed Sheffield United and 18 points clear of third-placed Watford and looking on course for a Premier League return.

The verdict

This is an intriguing move for the Clarets.

There may be some concerns about Obafemi, particularly given some of Martin’s comments, but Vincent Kompany has proven his recruitment credentials with some outstanding additions for the Clarets this season, so he has earned the right for his judgement to be trusted.

Obafemi has shown himself to be more than capable at finding the back of the net at this level and at age 22, he still has plenty of room for development, potentially making him a smart long-term investment for the club, while you would back him to improve under Kompany’s expert guidance.

With the Clarets looking almost certain to secure promotion this season, the signings of Foster and Obafemi will help to get them over the line and if the Obafemi deal is a success, it could look like something of a bargain in the future.
