Thursday evening saw the UWCL move in different directions, but our attention traveled toward Switzerland. FC Zürich faced the titleholders, Lyon, in the 3rd game of the UWCL group stage. The difference between the teams and leagues was evident and in the end, it was Lyon that left the pitch as victors: 0-3.

Both teams fielded a 4-3-3 formation which meant that they both would like to utilise their wings in the attack. It also meant that the wings were concerned with defending when the opposition had the ball.

Lyon off to a flying start

We were just comfortable in our seats and the first action of the game had already been conducted. It took Lyon less than 5 minutes to make a mark and get on the scoresheet. In the 4th minute, it was Melvine Malard who converted a Le Sommer corner into the far post and put the guests in the advantage: 0-1.

They managed to double their lead 30 minutes later, with a Signe Bruun goal in the 35th minute. The Dane was eagerly looking for a goal and she did exactly that, giving Lyon a more comfortable lead going into the second half.

Zürich don’t pose too much of a threat

The story wasn’t much different in the second half and it was more a case of Zürich trying not to concede more. But in attack, there were pretty helpless and their quality just was lacking to really hurt Lyon. This is also reflected in the expected goal numbers of the game. Zürich had 0,2 expected goals while Lyon had 3,8 expected goals.

Signe Bruun sealed the deal for Lyon in the 66th minute with the 0-3 for Lyon. It was over and done with it at this point which made it a solid win and a clean sheet for the guest from France.

With this win, Lyon grabs their first win in this UWCL season after a disappointing start. They now sit 3rd in their group behind Arsenal and Juventus, and they will have to perform better to reach the knock-out stages of the competition. Zürich remains 4th in the group with no points yet.
