Onel Hernandez grabbed his first goal for Birmingham and was lauded by Blues fans as he showed the quality Lee Bowyer’s side have been lacking in recent weeks after arriving from Norwich City on loan.
Birmingham took the lead after tepid opening half hour. Lukas Jutkiewicz won the ball in the air and then threaded it through to the Cuban, who slotted past Barnsley keeper Brad Collins.
Blues doubled their lead after the break when Barnsley a corner eluded Collins and Scott Hogan forced home a loose ball from close range.
Barnsley did make it a nervy finish to the game however as Victor Adeboyejo scored a consolation goal for the Tykes but the hosts were able to see the game out, giving themselves a much needed three points and more breathing room between themselves and those in the fight against relegation.
However, it was Onel Hernandez who grabbed the headlines as he put in a lively display for Birmingham leaving fans full of praise for their new man.
