Shrewsbury Town are set to part company with their manager Steve Cotterill by mutual consent nearly a month after the club's 2022-23 season ended, according to Football Insider.

A new footballing board is set to take shape at Salop, and they look likely to want to install a new head coach in the dugout for a fresh start at Montgomery Waters Meadow.

Cotterill admitted in May that he was uncertain over his future at the club when it was revealed that there would be a restructure above him, with Cheltenham Town's Mickey Moore recently arriving as director of football.

How has Steve Cotterill done at Shrewsbury Town?

Cotterill was appointed at the League One outfit in November 2020, guiding the club to finishes of 17th, 18th and 12th in the third tier of English football.

Town were in the relegation zone of League One when he arrived after 13 matches, but Cotterill soon got them out of trouble and they ended up being safe by a seven-point margin.

However, twice during that season Cotterill was admitted to hospital for COVID-19 related illnesses, meaning he missed a large chunk of matches and assistant Aaron Wilbraham took his place in the dugout.

Cotterill was able to stay fit and healthy though for the next two seasons but Shrewsbury struggled in the first third of 2021-22 as they sat in the relegation zone for the most part, however they got their act together in the second half of the campaign and finished 10 points clear of the drop.

2022-23 was more successful for Cotterill and Shrewsbury - at no point were they in the relegation zone and they stayed in mid-table for the majority of the campaign whilst never really threatening a play-off charge, eventually ending a full 18 points off the top six but finishing in 12th.

Are Shrewsbury Town right to sack Steve Cotterill?

On the basis of results over the course of the 2022-23 season, Cotterill perhaps deserved to carry on in his job - but when you look at the end to the season that Salop had then there was cause for concern.

The six-match win streak in the league in January and February was good but their form from mid-March onwards wasn't - a 2-0 loss away at Ipswich Town was the start of a run which saw just one win from their final 10 matches and that perhaps alarmed the board at the club.

With Moore now arriving as director of football, there's clearly going to be changes made and more of a head coach will be sought after, with Moore dealing with transfers, contracts and the like.

Perhaps that wouldn't suit Cotterill anyway as he's an old school manager that would perhaps like to be involved in deals, so after nearly three years it was maybe the right time to part company and go their separate ways.
