Sheffield United's Vini Souza is a wanted man
This article is part of Football League World's 'Terrace Talk' series, which provides personal opinions from our FLW Fan Pundits regarding the latest breaking news, teams, players, managers, potential signings and more...
Fenerbache and José Mourinho have reportedly been quoted an asking price of at least €15 million in their pursuit of Sheffield United's Vini Souza, although it could take even more than that to prize the midfielder away from Bramall Lane in the dying embers of the summer transfer window.
Souza only joined the Blades last summer in a £10 million switch from Belgian outfit Lommel SK, which the Championship side are understood to be keen to profit on amid continual speculation surrounding the Brazilian's future in South Yorkshire.
The 25-year-old had previously been linked with both AC Milan and Fulham, with Chris Wilder reported to have demanded £30m from the Cottagers for Souza at the time before they eventually moved for ex-Blade Sander Berge following Joao Palhinha's switch to Bayern Munich.
Fenerbache now reportedly possess an interest in a bid to lure Souza away from the club before Friday's deadline. However, according to recent report from Turkish outlet Hurriyet, legendary Portuguese boss Mourinho will have to shell out at least €15 million (£12.7 million) to complete the deal.
The midfielder has made a significant impression in the Blades' midfield engine room during their early Championship encounters this term, notably registering a standout display as they beat Preston North End 2-0 on the opening day.
Souza's Sheffield United career has undertaken a real turnaround as of late, with the former Espanyol man now among the most prized cogs in Chris Wilder's system.
Indeed, that is exactly why Football League World's resident Blades fan pundit Jimmy believes it may take even more than United's reported asking price for them to ultimately sanction a late exit for the rejuvenated all-action midfielder.
"Fenerbache are said to be keen on Vini Souza, it depends on what they're going to offer really," Jimmy explained to Football League World.
"Every player is for sale at the right place but Souza has gone from zero to almost hero in a very short space of time.
"He fits in really well alongside Oliver Arblaster in the centre of midfield, they're starting to get a good connection going and he's finally looking like he could be that destroyer that we've been looking for in the middle, so I think it's going to take more than 15 million euros to prize him away.
"I think we paid £10m for him and we'll be looking to make money on him if we're going to sell him to be honest, because I believe he's got three years plus one left on his contract in United's favour.
"So if anyone wants him, they're going to have to show us the money I'm afraid.
Jimmy is perfectly justified in accepting every player has a price, a sentiment which rings particularly true at Championship level. No second-tier club can truly afford to reject each and every offer they receive.
Then again, the Blades should not really be in any real rush to sell Souza after clearing the wage bill somewhat this summer.
Alongside Arblaster, Hamer and O'Hare, Souza forms quite possibly the finest midfield in the division and is surely among the very top midfielders at this level, too.
With such little time to spare in the summer window, he would prove incredibly difficult to replace irrespective of the potential fee they could get from Fenerbache and they really must try and do what they can to avoid selling him - unless an offer comes in that is simply too good to turn down.
