Nathan Redmond and Danny Ings are training with Sheffield United. Thus social media has been flooded with comments.
Having looked at Danny Ings, one part of the former Southampton double act. It’s now time to turn attention to Redmond. Who despite representing Birmingham City in 2010-2011 is only 31. 31! A fact that has taken many of us off guard.
However, whilst being closer to thirty than we thought. His age is perhaps not the concern. Rather his recent spells on the sidelines. Let’s take a closer look at Nathan Redmond.
As hinted at earlier, 15 years ago, Nathan Redmond began his senior career at Birmingham City. After just turning 17, Redmond made his debut for Birmingham in the FA Cup.
Over the next couple of seasons, he made 82 appearances for Birmingham scoring 9 goals and getting 11 assists. Before moving on to Premier League Norwich City.
The Canaries would be relegated in Redmond’s first season with the club as he made 34 top flight appearances delivering just four goal contributions.
A Championship return was perfect for Redmond playing all 46 games Redmond managed six goals and 13 appearances. With Norwich City gaining promotion through the playoffs.
This time he was more ready for the Premier League. 35 Premier League appearances saw him add six goals and three assists as Norwich City fell to relegation.
Unlike, Ings whose move to Southampton came after an unfortunate spell of injuries at Liverpool. Redmond’s career was on an upward trajectory. An impressive availability record of 50 total games in his first season on the South coast saw Redmond score seven Premier League goals and contribute 1 assist.
His best season until the 2018-2019 season. Where his nine goals and six assists in all competitions saw him win the Saints’ Player of the year award.
Followed by a number of steady seasons with decent output, Redmond managed to be consistently available. With a total of 102 appearances between 2019 and 2022.
Besiktas came calling for Redmond on a temporary basis in 2022-2023. For his first and only spell outside of England, Redmond was effective.
The wide forward managed five goals and five assists in 25 Super Lig games. It turned out to be his last season of consistent football up to now.
A return to England with Vincent Kompany’s Burnley didn’t really work for either. Redmond only made 12 appearances in the Premier League completing just 132 minutes. Never starting a games as Burnley then got relegated from the Premier League game.
Redmond’s time at Burnley was unfortunately dominated by injuries. A hamstring injury in the Premier League season saw him out for 310 days missing 34 games according to Transfermarkt.
Last season in the Championship. Redmond missed 14 games due to a calf injury. His three games in Scott Parker’s side saw him contribute one assist.
Would Nathan Redmond be a good signing? There are pros and cons.
Let’s start with the positives. Championship and Premier League experience. The Blades need a right-winger desperately and have for two seasons now. He’d give great competition and advice to Andre Brooks.
But his recent injuries. There is a fear that he might not be available which is unfortunate given his otherwise stellar availability throughout most of his career.
If he’s put his injury problems behind him, if the wage isn’t too high. Perhaps Redmond would be a good signing. Although, there will be more reservations compared to Ings. Hopefully, if he does sign, he can rejuvenate his career.
