Earlier this week, after considerable speculation regarding his future, Manuel Neuer confirmed that he would be retiring from the German national team.

After a difficult period prior to the start of Euro 2024, there were calls for the Bayern Munich shot-stopper to be dropped in favour of Marc-André ter Stegen.

However, Julian Nagelsmann stuck by Neuer, and during Euro 2024, the 38-year-old was one of Germany’s most consistent and reliable players, proving to be a source of frustration for opposition attackers.

Regardless, upon stating his decision, it was confirmed that ter Stegen would succeed Neuer as the German national team’s number one.

It is understood that after discussions with Nagelsmann, the Barcelona goalkeeper would finally get his chance with Die Nationalmannschaft after years of playing as Neuer’s understudy.

Nevertheless, should ter Stegen be the one to succeed Neuer?

According to Sky Germany expert Didi Hamann, the on-loan VfB Stuttgart goalkeeper Alexander Nübel should be Germany’s number one going forward.

“With Alexander Nübel, you have a goalkeeper who, in my opinion, has to be the DFB goalkeeper for the next three or four tournaments. He is five years younger than ter Stegen and, for me, the best at the moment. I would consider putting Nübel in goal at the next World Cup.”

Having played a key role in helping guide Stuttgart to the Champions League, since returning to the Bundesliga, Nübel has consistently proved why he is one of the best goalkeepers in Germany.

While it is expected that the 27-year-old will now play the role previously held by ter Stegen, should Nagelsmann offer Nübel the chance to impress in a Germany shirt, then the former Bayern head coach may be forced into having a difficult conversation with the pair.
