Should Barcelona re-sign Lionel Messi?

Lionel Messi is a Barcelona legend, and probably the greatest player of all time, but should the Catalan club go back in for him? PSG have confirmed that he will be leaving this summer after two years at the club, and he will move on to pastures new.

The 35-year-old has had a very successful season – he would probably call it the best season of his career – having finally lifted the World Cup in December. Messi performed brilliantly, being Argentina’s talisman and taking them to the pinnacle of football and the man from Rosario finally has the missing piece that completes the beautiful jigsaw of his career.

Even for PSG, the statistics have been jaw-dropping, as they always are with Messi. Thirty-two starts in Ligue 1 – 16 goals and 16 assists – yet the PSG fans have been unhappy with the Argentinian. They have criticised him for being lazy, and wasteful, only using the club to gently see himself to the end of his glittering career.

It is no secret that Barcelona want Messi back, and the indications are that he would not oppose the move. Xavi has spoken of his desire to see him return, as have club president Joan Laporta and the player’s father, Jorge Messi.

So the simple question is, does it make sense? Xavi’s men have moved on, lifting the La Liga trophy this season and playing an attractive brand of football. To take Messi back would not help with Barça’s terrible financial situation, and it would cut off a route for a younger player like Ousmane Dembélé or Ansu Fati.

On the positive side though, Messi could be the cherry on the cake for this Barcelona team. They have struggled in the Champions League for far too long, and if you add Leo to this already strong Barça team, they would be a force to be reckoned with in Europe.

The Messi to Barcelona transfer saga will likely rumble on for a while, as Barça weigh up the pros and cons, and the financial possibility of the move. But no one would deny that it would be beautiful to see Messi back home.
