Ruud van Nistelrooy has stepped down as coach of PSV Eindhoven with one match of the season remaining, the club has announced.

PSV are currently second behind champions Feyenoord in the Eredivisie table, and will be aiming to cement a runners-up spot when they take on AZ Alkmaar on the final day of the season on Sunday.

But the board of directors held a meeting with Van Nistelrooy to discuss his future on Tuesday evening, at which the club say it was agreed that he would continue to lead the club until the end of the season, with further talks to be held in the summer.

However, on Wednesday morning Van Nistelrooy instead indicated that he would be stepping down with immediate effect, and Fred Rutten will now take charge of the AZ game this weekend.

A prolific former striker for the likes of PSV, Manchester United, Real Madrid and the Dutch national team, Van Nistelrooy took charge of PSV’s senior team in March 2022 and won the Johann Cruyff Shield and this season’s KNVB Cup during his time at the helm.

But reports in the Netherlands this week suggest players had complained to the club about the 46-year-old’s style of management, and he will now look to continue his coaching career elsewhere.
