The Addicks have been busy during the summer transfer window so far.
Charlton Athletic have been busy during the summer transfer window following their promotion to the Championship.
The Addicks have brought in several new players to strengthen their squad for life back in the second tier, which has contributed to them making an encouraging start to the 2025/26 campaign under Nathan Jones.
Charlton have signed Charlie Kelman from Queens Park Rangers for an initial fee of £3.5 million, brought in Tanto Olaofe from Stockport County for around £1.5 million, and paid more than £2 million to sign Rob Apter from Blackpool.
Former Luton Town trio Thomas Kaminski, Amari'i Bell and Reece Burke have also moved to The Valley this summer, with the Belgian goalkeeper reportedly having joined for a fee in the region of £1 million. Joe Rankin-Costello also made a switch to SE7 after Charlton agreed a deal worth around £750,000 with Blackburn Rovers.
Midfielder Sonny Carey became the Addicks' first arrival of the summer when he signed on a free transfer from Blackpool back in June, while Harvey Knibbs is Nathan Jones' newest addition, having joined Charlton from Reading for around £1.8 million this month.
Charlton have made a positive start to the new season, with a couple of good results in the Championship and a first-round victory over Stevenage in the EFL Cup, but Jones has not yet finished his summer transfer business.
The Welshman has discussed potentially making another new signing before the transfer window closes, as per Rich Cawley via X.
"What we probably want to do is add at least one body," Jones said.
"We know what position we need it. We want to make sure our numbers are good.
"The club have been amazing in backing us."
Considering that the Addicks have been linked with right-sided defenders this summer, including Lewis Miller, who has since signed for Blackburn, and Dexter Lembikisa, who was on trial with Charlton, but have not yet brought one in, there is a good chance that is the position in which Jones would like another option.
With that in mind, let's take a look at two players Charlton could consider signing before the transfer deadline on September 1st.
Charlton have been linked with a move for Japanese right-back Shinnosuke Fukuda during the summer transfer window, with him currently playing a key role in Kyoto Sanga's title challenge at the top of the J1 League.
The Addicks were keen on signing the defender on an initial loan deal with an option to buy, but Kyoto Sanga were only interested in a permanent exit, as per the Daily Mail.
The 24-year-old's chances of being included in Japan's squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup would be improved by playing Championship football this term.
Journalist Will Pickworth reported that Fukuda has a release clause worth £800,000 in his contract, so Charlton may have to pay a significant six-figure fee if they are going to sign the full-back during the current transfer window.
Fukuda's contract is set to expire at the end of January 2026, so if Jones wants to avoid the risk of other clubs joining the race before his deal comes to an end, then the Addicks may choose to pay up and bring him to SE7 as soon as possible.
If Charlton want a short-term solution to ensure they have enough options on the right-hand side of defence between now and January, they could consider making a loan move for Crystal Palace youngster Caleb Kporha.
It is no secret that Nathan Jones prefers not to sign players on a temporary basis, but the 19-year-old would be ideal if he is unable to bring anyone in on a permanent deal before the end of the transfer window.
Kporha dealt with a back injury during pre-season, but he is back in training now and would be a decent option for Championship clubs if the Eagles are willing to send him out on loan.
He signed a new long-term deal at Selhurst Park earlier this year, and has already featured in the Premier League, FA Cup and EFL Cup during his short career so far, but has not been involved at all so far this season.
The Addicks could do worse than sign a player until January and then make a move for Fukuda when his contract expires, and bringing in Kporha on loan would be a good option if they do take that approach.
