The extent of the ankle injury Sheyi Ojo sustained in Millwall’s defeat to Nottingham Forest last time out is yet to be revealed, however the early signs are not positive with the Liverpool loanee having to wear a protective boot.

The 24-year-old has not had the same impact with the Lions as he did for Cardiff City last season but he was visibly growing into a starting berth in the last month or so.

Ojo has chipped in with two assists in the Championship this term where Rowett has picked him from the start 12 times.

The versatile forward’s contract at Anfield runs out at the end of next season, by which time he will be nearly 26, and therefore he needs to gain admirers in the form of potential suitors between now and then, including in this, his seventh loan spell away from the club.

Ojo took to Instagram to air his disappointment at his injury setback on Tuesday evening.

He wrote: “Been trying to make sense of it all… I’m gutted.

“All I can say is I’ll be working hard giving my all everyday to come back stronger than ever. “Thanks for the positive messages.

“See you soon! Sheyi Ojo.”

Gary Rowett stated that Ojo’s scan results have not been revealed yet when he spoke to NewsAtDen, however the tone of the 24-year-old’s post and the necessary crutches and boot suggest that this is not a short term knock.

The Verdict

Millwall have ran into an injury crisis at a really bad time, with other side’s around them strengthening their squads and bolstering their play-off pushes as a result.

The Lions have won just two of their last nine in the second tier, looking at the personnel in Rowett’s squad they are arguably still overachieving but that will not deter the frustrations from the stands, after the Lions have flirted with the play-offs but have not broken into them consistently over the last three seasons.

It will be interesting to monitor how this affects Millwall’s transfer business in the next fortnight and also whether it has a bearing on whether Jed Wallace stays at the club this month.
