Luis Enrique thanked the PSG supporters for their touching tribute to his daughter after his side won the Champions League.

Enrique’s daughter Xana passed away in 2019 at the age of nine due to cancer, and after PSG’s 5-0 win over Inter Milan in Munich, the PSG fans unveiled a tifo picturing Enrique planting a flag in the centre circle alongside Xana.

Xana celebrated with her father after he led Barcelona to the Champions League in 2015, carrying a Barcelona flag out onto the pitch and Enrique also wore a t-shirt after PSG’s victory which showed a similar image, and is the logo of Xana’s foundation.

“It was very emotional,” Enrique said.

“It was beautiful to think that the supporters had thought about me and my family.

“I don’t need to win the Champions League or even win a game to think about my daughter. My daughter is always with me.

“She’s here, she’s supporting our family and I feel her presence even when we lose.

“It’s just about pooling everything we went through together and really taking the positives out of a negative situation. That’s our mindset, that’s my mentality, it’s my family’s mentality and I was delighted, but I don’t need a a trophy to think about my daughter. She’s always here with me.”

Enrique also reflected on the enormity of winning PSG’s first Champions League title and again praised the supporters.

He said: “My first day at the PSG camp, I had my first press conference when my French was even worse than it is today and I said that the ultimate goal for me as the new coach was to fill the trophy cabinet.

“The only trophy that was missing from that cabinet was the Champions League and here we are.

“It’s a great thing when you can make people you don’t even know happy and our fans showed this evening just how intense they are. They are the 12th man on the pitch and I think the team reflects the supporters.”
