Sheffield Wednesday are waiting on a decision from Celtic after making an enquiry about 23-year-old centre-back Stephen Welsh, according to The Sheffield Star.

The Owls are locked in a tight race for automatic promotion in League One – sitting three points back from league leaders Plymouth Argyle and four above third-placed Ipswich Town with a game in hand over them both.

A report from The Sheffield Star has revealed that their main focus before the transfer window slams shut at 11pm is on strengthening their promotion credentials.

The Owls are said to be looking at signing another defender, despite bringing in Aden Flint on loan last week, and have made an enquiry about Welsh.

That is sitting with Celtic, who it appears are yet to make a decision about the future of the 23-year-old defender.

The former Scotland U21 international is a 6ft2, right-footed centre-back that has been on the fringes of Ange Postecoglou’s squad this season.

He’s featured six times for the Old Firm club this term – taking his tally to 52 appearances – and is under contract until 2025.

The report also claims that there is interest from the Championship in Josh Windass and at least two other Owls players but that none of them are likely to leave today.

Darren Moore is the current manager?

True False

The Verdict

Given Moore has favoured a back three this season and the injury issues his side have faced, it makes sense that Wednesday want another defender before the window closes.

It remains to be seen whether their pursuit of Welsh is on loan or permanent but given his standing at Celtic and the long-term deal he signed in 2021, you’d imagine it is the former.

They’re waiting on a decision from the Scottish club following their enquiry but you have to feel they will be assessing other targets as well.

The 23-year-old looks like a bright, up-and-coming centre-back that could do with regular first team football and that will surely work in their favour.
