Sheffield Wednesday looked like they could be bringing Haydon Roberts in on a loan deal this month but, as reported by The Athletic, it won’t be the Owls who land his signature this window.

Darren Moore’s side have been linked with the youngster and with the club eager to try and ensure they can get into the play-off spots at the very least this season, they’ll want to ensure they have the squad strength to do so.

Roberts could certainly have aided that, with the player already fairly experienced in League One football despite his age. At just 18-years-old he played for Rochdale and although they struggled in the third tier, the defender managed 26 games and didn’t look out of place.

He’s since struggled for competitive action though and just can’t break into the Brighton first-team picture. Instead, he has been limited to just games for their reserve side – so a loan move away this month could be hugely beneficial to him.

The chance to tackle League One again with Sheffield Wednesday, albeit at the top end of the table, could surely have appealed to Roberts. However, it now looks like he won’t be heading to Hillsborough. Instead, a move higher up the football pyramid could be on the cards, with the report claiming there is Championship interest in his services.

Whilst Roberts has yet to play in the second tier, he would no doubt jump at the chance to test his luck there – and it looks increasingly likely that a deal will be done to send him on a short-term deal elsewhere before the window closes.

The Verdict

Haydon Roberts looks a decent enough talent for any number of teams to sign this month and he could prove to be a valuable option for a squad to have.

He’s well-versed in League One football, so a move to a side in the third tier would be an astute signing for whoever manages it. With his knowledge of the game in that division already, it would take very little action for him to adapt to that style of football again.

The Championship would represent a bigger challenge for the player but he could thrive if given the chance. He certainly looks capable of eventually developing into a good player and the chance to test his mettle in the second tier could really bring him on leaps and bounds.

It’s unclear where he might end up yet, only that he will likely not stay at Brighton for the second half of the campaign. Whoever can pull off a deal for him then will be landing themselves a superb player.
