Sheffield Wednesday enjoyed an excellent day in the FA Cup third round on Saturday, thrashing Championship rivals Cardiff City 4-0.

Having secured their place in the next round of the tournament, the Owls' focus will, for now, turn back to the January transfer window, and their battle to avoid relegation from the Championship.

Danny Rohl's side currently sit 22nd in the second-tier table, three points adrift of safety. As a result, they are going to want to get things right in the market this month, to give themselves the best possible chance of climbing out of trouble.

So with that in mind, we've taken a look at the latest Sheffield Wednesday transfer stories to have emerged recently, right here.

Wednesday closing in on James Beadle move

One player who it seems could soon be close to becoming the first player to complete a move to Wednesday this month is Brighton goalkeeper James Beadle.

The 19-year-old is currently on loan with League One side Oxford United and has helped them mount a push for promotion, although it seems he could soon be set for a step up to the Championship of his own.

According to reports from The Sheffield Star, Brighton are planning to recall Beadle from that loan and send him to the Championship, with Wednesday said to have been in positive talks over a deal that could go through in the next week.

That is despite apparent interest from the likes of Birmingham City and would likely see Devis Vazquez loan spell with the Owls, from AC Milan, come to an end.

Conor Coventry pursuit steps up

Another Premier League player who may be on the way to Sheffield Wednesday this month is West Ham midfielder Conor Coventry.

According to further reports from The Sheffield Star, the Owls have now stepped up their interest in the 23-year-old and are set to hold talks with him about a potential move this week. That comes amid reported interest from other clubs in the Championship, League One, and the Netherlands, in what could be a big battle for his services.

For their part, West Ham are said to be open to Coventry leaving permanently this month, although it apparently remains to be seen if Wednesday are working towards a loan or a permanent deal for the midfielder.

Michael Smith touted for potential exit

In terms of outgoings, Michael Smith now looks to be the latest Wednesday player whose future could soon be up for discussion.

The 32-year-old has found game time somewhat hard to come by for the Owls this season, and according to journalist Darren Witcoop, he is now attracting interest over a potential move to League One.

However, the Owls will apparently only allow the striker, who has 18 months remaining on his contract at Hillsborough, to leave if they can source a replacement for him - a stance they're also said to hold on fellow forward Lee Gregory.
