Sheffield Wednesday are in a fight to stay in the Championship.
After promotion last season via the play-offs, Wednesday let go of Darren Moore and brought in former Watford manager Xisco Munoz. However, he was sacked in October after just picking up two points from his opening ten games.
Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri then took a gamble in Munoz’s successor - bringing in young German coach Danny Rohl.
The 34-year-old then became the youngest manager in the EFL, and many were surprised by his appointment, with many having doubts about his ability to keep the Owls afloat.
So far though he is doing a good job, and after Wednesday looked dead and buried in early months, he has them within touching distance of safety.
Rohl will be looking to add quality to his squad towards the end of January, in order to boost their chances of avoiding relegation.
Wednesday made 12 signings in the summer transfer window, with a lot failing to impress.
So, towards the end of this current window, they need to make sure their signings are players that are better than what they have already got that can kick them on to safety in the remaining months of the season.
One player they have been linked with is Jordan Jones.
According to a report from HITC, Sheffield Wednesday, Huddersfield Town and Rotherham United are ‘hot on the trail’ for Jones.
Jones is a 29-year-old winger who currently plays for Wigan Athletic in League One. He has been at Wigan since the summer of 2021 after joining from Rangers. His contract at the DW is set to expire at the end of the season.
He has spent the majority of his time at Wigan away from the club. After spending the first half of the 21/22 campaign with his then-new employers, he was with St Mirren in Scotland for the second-half of the campaign.
The Northern Ireland international then spent last season on loan at Kilmarnock, before returning to Wigan in the summer.
He has been one of the Latics’ key players this season, scoring two and notching four assists in 17 games so far.
Wigan suffered an eight-point deduction at the start of the season due to financial problems, which initially put them in a relegation fight.
But with the help of Jones, manager Shaun Maloney so far has guided them away from any danger of finishing in the bottom four.
Whilst Jones is a good player, questions do have to be asked whether he can provide the same quality at Championship level.
Jones has never played in the Championship before, so it would be a big risk of Wednesday to take him on and hope he is firing from the start.
Statistically, Jones is not pulling up trees despite being a key man at Wigan. He has an average dribble success rate per 90 of 1.38, and his dribble success rate overall is only 46.5%. If he is putting up these sorts of numbers in League One, you can imagine they will be worse in the Championship with the step-up in overall quality of division.
His passing accuracy is also fairly low at 78.4%. He does have reasonable shooting stats though, averaging 1.45 shots per 90, but again, in the Championship these numbers will more than likely be lower, which is not what Wednesday need ideally.
Wednesday are in need of a winger, of course, with the Owls boasting Djeidi Gassama and Anthony Musaba as their only out-and-out wingers at the moment, with Mallik Wilks seemingly frozen out after being limited to just 134 minutes of action since Rohl’s arrival.
So, in many ways, it is good to see that Wednesday are looking to recruit in areas of the squad that need strengthening.
However, they can do a lot better than Jones, and should look for more Championship experience in order to save them from an immediate return to the third tier and not someone that is untested at the level.
