Jimmy Shan has joined Darren Moore’s coaching staff at Sheffield Wednesday, according to the Sheffield Star.

The 43-year-old has taken up roles at Kidderminster Harriers, Solihull Moors and Rochdale since leaving West Bromwich Albion and he has joined Moore’s backroom team in an unnamed role.

Shan actually finished off the 2018/19 season as manager of West Bromwich Albion, following Moore’s dismissal, overseeing a play-off semi final defeat to eventual winners Aston Villa.

Shan then reuniting with Moore a few years later, and working under rather than above him, makes a further mockery of the decision to dismiss Moore of his duties at The Hawthorns.

Shan was assistant manager as Rochdale struggled in their first season since relegation to League Two last term, working alongside Robbie Stockdale in the dugout.

Shan’s appointment in the backroom staff does go some way to showing the faith that the Wednesday board have in Darren Moore, despite the club sitting outside the automatic promotion places, with the addition presumably coming at the manager’s request.

There is a lot of pressure for the Owls to deliver promotion this season, particularly after the eye-catching summer transfer window that the board funded.

Plymouth Argyle and Portsmouth are overperforming compared to their budgets at the moment, but over 46 games the Owls are still in a commanding position.

In what decade did Carlton Palmer sign for Sheffield Wednesday?

1960s 1970s 1980s 1990s

Assistant manager Jamie Smith and first team coaches Adriano Basso and Simon Ireland remain in place with the Owls, Moore must have observed some kind of an angle or marginal gain that the club could capitalise on by Shan’s presence in the building.

Wednesday have been able to carry the momentum they built with a very impressive second half to last season, despite defeat in the play-offs, into this one, and Ipswich Town’s first loss of the season would have given them hope of building a league title push.

There will be friction from the stands if the Owls do not look like top two fodder, but Moore appears to be handling the pressure well at the moment.
