Sheffield Wednesday pulled off one of the greatest comebacks in English Football League history on Thursday when they overturned a four-goal deficit to book their place in the League One play-off final.
They looked to have no chance of progressing to the final after they suffered a 4-0 defeat against Peterborough United in the first leg at the ABAX Stadium.
However, a stunning comeback in Yorkshire saw them level the scores 5-5 on aggregate before winning the penalty shoot-out.
Wednesday made an ideal start to Thursday’s clash at Hillsborough as Michael Smith fired the opener from the penalty spot within the first 10 minutes.
Lee Gregory then added another before the interval to spark hopes of a miracle among the home fans.
The Owls continued the pressure in the second half and their efforts were rewarded when Reece James notched the third with a close-range finish after 71 minutes.
Liam Palmer then popped up with a late equaliser to take the game to extra time.
However, the visitors went back in front on aggregate after Gregory deflected a Nathan Thompson header into his own net in the 105th minute.
The home side levelled the scores again, with Callum Paterson poking home with eight minutes remaining to send the match to penalties.
All five Wednesday players scored, while Dan Butler missed the target for Peterborough, sparking wild celebrations at Hillsborough.
This is the greatest comeback in the EFL play-off history, with no team ever overcoming more than a two-goal first-leg deficit.
Darren Moore’s side will meet either Barnsley or Bolton Wanderers in the final at Wembley Stadium on May 29.
Bolton and Barnsley will meet each other on Friday for the second leg at Oakwell, with the tie evenly poised at 1-1.
