A trio of Championship clubs are set to compete for the same signing from Rangers this summer

Sheffield Wednesday, Preston North End and Derby County have all made enquiries for Rangers’ Scott Wright this summer.

According to Darren Witcoop, the 26-year-old is set to depart Ibrox before the market shuts next month.

The winger has been unable to cement himself as a regular starter during his time with the Glasgow outfit, which has led to speculation over his future.

He made 23 appearances in the Scottish Premiership last season, but only started eight times, as the team finished second in the table (all stats from Fbref).

The player’s contract is set to expire next year, meaning Rangers could look to cash in now in order to avoid losing him for nothing in 2025.

Championship interest in Scott Wright

Sheffield Wednesday, Preston and Derby are among the clubs interested in signing Wright this summer.

However, they face competition from unnamed clubs overseas in the race to his signature.

Each of the three Championship sides are understood to have other options on their transfer shortlists, but Wright could become a target.

Despite the interest in Wright, it has been claimed that the Owls are still in pursuit of Brest’s Karamoko Dembele.

It has been reported that the Yorkshire outfit have held talks with Wright’s representatives over a potential move to Hillsborough.

But an official bid has yet to be made to Rangers for the forward, as they weigh up their possible targets.

Danny Rohl will be hoping to bolster his side for next season, having guided the team to a miraculous survival from relegation to League One in the prior campaign.

The Owls also face competition from Derby, as well as Portsmouth, in the race for Dembele, who previously played for Wright’s current rivals Celtic before making the switch to French football in 2022.

Dembele spent last season on loan with Blackpool, where he bagged eight goals in 39 league games.

Sheffield Wednesday’s summer plans

Rohl will be keen to improve on the team’s 20th place finish in the table last season, and has already bolstered his first team squad this summer.

Olaf Kobacki, Yan Valery, Max Lowe, Jamal Lowe, Nathaniel Chalobah, Svante Ingelsson, Ben Hamer, Charlie McNeill and James Beadle have all arrived, in what has been a busy transfer window so far.

Meanwhile, Preston have made just two new additions, including Sam Greenwood and Stefán Teitur Thórdarson.

And the Rams have brought in the likes of Ebou Adams, Kenzo Goudmijn, Ben Osborn, Corey Taylor-Blackett, Kayden Jackson and Jerry Yates as part of their business so far this transfer market.

Wright signing could be an affordable option

Wright has earned a lot of quality experience competing at a high level during his time at Rangers, including fighting for top prizes such as the Premiership and even the Europa League.

While his game time at Rangers has been inconsistent, he absolutely has the quality to perform well in the Championship if given the right environment.

Given he is into the last year of his contract, he could prove a very affordable option to try and bolster a team’s attacking options.
