Sheffield Wednesday defender Jack Hunt has admitted that the Owls will have underachieved this season if they are unable to make the automatics.

The former Bristol City and Huddersfield defender also went on to say that a top-two finish is out of their hands after Rotherham and Wigan played out a 1-1 draw on Friday night.

However, the defender is only focussed on getting as many points as possible as they look to overcome a rejuvenated Doncaster Rover’s side on Saturday.

Speaking to The Yorkshire Post, Hunt spoke about a top-two finish, saying: “I wouldn’t say they’re gone but it’s almost theirs to throw away and when things are taken out of your hands it makes it very difficult.

“The play-offs are very realistic and we believe whoever we face in them, we can still go up. We’ve under-achieved if we don’t make the top two.”

In current form, Sheffield Wednesday would finish the season on 77 points with Hunt targeting more: “Last season the top two (Hull City and Peterborough United) had 89 and 87 points.

“If you get to that and don’t go up automatically, you can probably count yourselves unlucky but we have to get to that number first.”

There’s a lot of work still to be done at Sheffield Wednesday this season. Poor early season form has let them down hugely but their performances of late have been hugely impressive.

It showcases the squad’s true ability but it maybe comes too late for a top two push. All Darren Moore and his Wednesday side can do is be a very difficult side to play against and keep the pressure on those in the top six.

Wednesday will fancy their chances in the play-offs should they get there but as everyone who follows the EFL knows, the play-offs are a lottery.
