With clubs circling around Danny Rohl, the Owls must worry that he could take Djeidi Gassama with him.

Sheffield Wednesday boss Danny Rohl looks like being a hot property once again over the summer.

There has been plenty of interest in the young German of late, with Southampton and Leicester both linked with a move for him. There are also clubs from Rohl’s homeland who are keen on him, with RB Leipzig seemingly leading the charge on that front.

After another impressive season this term, there are concerns among Owls fans that Rohl’s time with the club could be nearing its end. The former assistant manager of the German national team has had to face several issues during his time at Hillsborough, leading many to believe that his patience could be beginning to wear thin.

While Rohl’s future will be a big concern to the club and its fans, so should the future of Djeidi Gassama.

With seven goals to his name, the young winger has been electric this season and, if Rohl was to end up making the switch to either Southampton or Leicester, there could be a genuine possibility of him taking Gassama with him.

Losing Rohl would be a huge blow for Wednesday

When he arrived in South Yorkshire in October 2023, few could have the predicted the impact that Rohl would go on to have at Wednesday.

In what is his first ever proper managerial role, Rohl has transformed himself from a relatively unknown coach, into an exciting, forward-thinking young boss who is arguably one of the brightest in the EFL at the moment.

He worked wonders to keep the Owls in the Championship last season, after previous incumbent Xisco Munoz failed to win any of the club’s opening 10 league games.

This term, Rohl has led his team to new heights, with Wednesday firmly in the mix for a first Championship play-off berth since 2016/17 up until a few weeks ago. Despite the fact that recent form has seen them slip away from play-off contention, they could still secure a top-half finish in the second tier for the first time in six years.

When you factor in the seemingly endless challenges that controversial owner Dejphon Chansiri has brought upon the club, Rohl really has done a remarkable job.

His relationship with Chansiri has always been fairly fractious, but with Wednesday coming close to facing a three-window transfer embargo recently, there are concerns that this could prove to be the final straw for Rohl.

He needs support from the owner if he is to continue progressing the club, but with Chansiri appearing unlikely to drastically change his ways, this could finally be the moment when Rohl chooses to move on to fulfil his lofty ambitions.

Wednesday should worry about Rohl taking Gassama with him

If Rohl is to move on from Hillsborough at the end of the campaign, Wednesday would surely worry about the German taking Djeidi Gassama with him.

After showing flashes of his ability last season, the winger has really kicked on this term. The Frenchman has notched seven goals and one assist from 38 league appearances, in what has been a very impressive season for the youngster.

Only Josh Windass and Michael Smith have found the net more times than Gassama this season, and he has rapidly moulded himself into one of Rohl’s key performers.

A product of Paris St Germain’s youth academy, he made one senior appearance for the Parisians, before joining the Owls in August 2023.

Over the course of his time with the club so far, Gassama has developed into a huge threat to defences at Championship level. Crucially, he is trusted by Rohl to create and make things happen for Wednesday, and becoming one of your team’s main creators at the age of 21 is an impressive feat.

At his age, Gassama is only going to continue to improve, and could find himself catching the eye of plenty of clubs over the course of the next few years.

With that in mind, and Rohl potentially heading to two clubs who would surely have cash to spend in the Championship next season, fears that Gassama may follow him out of the door at Hillsborough are perfectly understandable.
