Destinations for the German to move to this summer aren't as apparent as they once were.

A new German club, Werder Bremen, have been linked with Sheffield Wednesday's manager Danny Rohl.

As much as Rohl may have hinted that he wants to leave Hillsborough this summer, it was never going to be an easy process, and it was never totally up to him.

Following the catastrophe that was Wednesday's failure to pay their players' March wages on time, Rohl's head has slowly been turned by the opportunity to potentially manage elsewhere. But, despite being one of the top young coaching prospects in this country, and having a decent pedigree as an assistant behind him too, no club has fully leaped at the opportunity to grab him.

Relegated sides Leicester City and Southampton were linked with him, but the Saints have appointed Will Still as their successor to Ivan Juric and Leicester look set to bring in Russell Martin - the man who led the first-team at St Mary's before the Croatian.

The level of compensation that the south coast outfit would've had to pay the Owls was reportedly an issue for them, even though the fee for Championship clubs is half of what Premier League teams would have to pay to get Rohl out of his deal, as per Sky Sports. There are two years left on the German's Wednesday contract.

Danny Rohl linked with Werder Bremen

Options aren't as plentiful as they once were for Rohl, but one new destination has popped up that could take a chance on the 36-year-old. Bremen are reportedly interested in filling their currently vacant managerial role with the Owls' boss, according to BILD.

The Bundesliga club recently parted ways with former boss Ole Werner after a decision was made by him to not re-up his agreement. Rohl isn't the only prospective candidate though. SV Elvesberg's Horst Steffen is also in the running, as per the German publication.

Rohl recently expressed his desire to one day manage in his country's first division. He worked for Bayern Munich, RB Leipzig and his national team before being appointed by Wednesday in October 2023. The second of those institutions he has been linked with becoming their next boss, alongside Wolfsburg, as per the Daily Mail, but, again, compensation may be a problem for them.

Danny Rohl can't afford to miss out on a summer move

Brides haven't been burned, nothing ugly has been said from either side, but it seems pretty clear that Rohl would rather not carry on at Hillsborough. He should always be loved by the supporters for the miracle that he pulled off in saving them from relegation in the 2023/24 campaign (his first season as a manager). Despite the adoration, if he is in the dugout come the beginning of the next term, it will feel a bit disingenuous.

Everyone connected to the Owls will know that they weren't the boss' first choice. Will that then affect their love and commitment to him? There's a very good chance that it might, and that's a situation he must be dreading should it become reality.
