Wednesday have been looking to recruit more players for Henrik Pedersen.

Sheffield Wednesday will not be able to sign any more players until their owner, Dejphon Chansiri, can prove that he is able to pay the players' wages.

As has often been the case with the Owls over recent weeks and months, any beacon of hope is often swatted away swiftly by the destructive hand of their Thai owner, in effect.

A positive opening day stand against Leicester City, despite being on the losing side of the result, and an EFL Cup victory over Bolton Wanderers gave Wednesday's supporters some hope that brighter days were coming soon.

Add to that the news that signings were being lined up, like former Leeds United captain Liam Cooper, and everything seemed to be moving in the right direction again. But no. It turns out that the latter part isn't quite what it first appeared to be.

Dejphon Chansiri hurdle revealed in Sheffield Wednesday transfer dealings

Despite the optimism about new faces coming to Hillsborough in the near future, it has now been reported, by Football Heaven's Andy Giddings, that the club won't be able to sign any new players until Chansiri can show the EFL that he will be able to pay their wages.

Even though Wednesday are no longer under any embargoes - their fee restriction remains in place until the summer of 2027 - all of their transfer moves still need to be approved by the EFL before they can officially bring them on board.

The owner's inability to cover the club's operating costs, when it comes to payment of players, staff, other clubs that he owes money to and HMRC, is the reason why Wednesday have such a shortage of on-pitch options.

Over the course of the summer, they've had to sell a lot of players for cheap fees in order to generate the necessary funds to pay off the club's debts. Michael Smith and Josh Windass also departed from Hillsborough after handing in their notices to the club following two months of non-payment.

It has left the new boss Pedersen in desperate need of extra bodies, something that he seemed at least somewhat confident of securing following the Bolton victory. "I can say that we are working very hard on this and I still hope [so]," said the Danish boss to The Star.

Latest Sheffield Wednesday transfer update could be a real blow to any survival hopes

With the recent problems that the Owls have had with paying the wages of their players, coaches and other people who work at the club, this latest update won't provide much hope to the supporters about any imminent moves being made.

On the plus side, the club will surely be aware of these restrictions, so maybe Pedersen and others aren't expecting this barrier to be a big one at all.

Either way, it's another hindrance to any forward progress being made on the pitch. Sooner or later, the players are going to get overwhelmingly fatigued by the amount of work they may have to do. As much as they put in a proud performance at the Toughsheet Community Stadium, Wednesday can't rely on the kids to bail them out in the Championship.
