However, The newly-relegated League One club will face competition from the higher division, according to Yorkshire Live.

The latest update from Yorkshire Live states that Championship newcomers, Hull City and Blackpool, have registered an interest, whilst Millwall are also keen.

The Birmingham-versatile player was a vital part of Neil Warnock’s side last time out, playing 42 games and with 22 of those being from the start.

Johnson scored three times and provided a further three assists during the 2020/21 campaign, in a season that he predominantly operated as a left midfielder.

The 30-year-old arrived on Teesside from Oxford United in August 2017 and has gone to make just shy of 100 appearances for Boro.

The verdict

It would be a surprise to see Johnson drop down to League One. He certainly has the ability and time left at Championship level.

He played a part in eight goals last season too, showing that he still has a knack for creating and scoring goals in the division.

He also offers versatility and that is increasingly important in the modern game. He can operate anywhere on the left side of the pitch, and he can also be deployed as a number ten if required.

The teams in pursuit will all be boosted by the arrival of Johnson. If not for a certain starting spot, he will provide competition for places in all positions on the left.
