The Owls are believed to be considering more than 60 transfer targets after their transfer embargo was lifted.
Sheffield Wednesday’s transfer plans have been revealed for the rest of the summer, with the Owls believed to be considering more than 60 transfer options now their embargo has been lifted.
Despite only able to field 15 senior first-team players, the Wednesday team did themselves and the supporters proud, providing a spirited performance that saw them edged out by Leicester City 2-1 at the King Power Stadium last Sunday.
The Owls thought they were going to be taking home at least a point after Nathaniel Chalobah’s opener, but goals from defenders Jannick Vestergaard and Wout Faes broke the 10-men hearts of Wednesday in the East Midlands.
There’s no doubt Wednesday are still in a mess under Dejphon Chansiri, with the club still having issues with paying employees on time, while the North Stand remains closed at Hillsborough due to safety concerns.
But one bit of positive news came through recently, with the Yorkshire outfit’s transfer embargo being lifted.
And with that in mind, it’s been recently revealed what Sheffield Wedneday’s plans are to improve the playing squad as they prepare to host Stoke City in the second-tier next weekend.
According to a fresh report by The Star, Sheffield Wednesday are keeping tabs on as many as 60 targets after their transfer embargo was lifted.
The club are still unable to pay fees for players - permanent or on loan - until 2027 as they had surpassed 30 days of late payments to clubs, but it at least means that the club can look at bolstering the squad ahead of what will be a very demanding 46-game season for all involved.
It is particularly important now, given Wednesday faced further issues to an already threadbare squad.
Barry Bannan was sent off at Leicester and will miss their next game in the League Cup, while both Nathaniel Chalobah and Yan Valery hobbled off injured to heap further misery onto Henrik Pedersen’s shoulders.
While heavy restrictions remain on what business can be done, the club has wasted little time identifying targets, with a long list developing that they feel can help them in the second-tier.
That pool of players is expected to be shortened this week, with business expected to be conducted in the coming days.
Wednesday are in loan talks with Manchester United pair Harry Amass and Toby Collyer, while experienced duo Liam Cooper and Ben Mee have been touted with moves to the Steel City themselves.
After their defeat to Leicester, Henrik Pedersen commented on the situation, saying: "We are working as hard as we can to bring new players and hopefully something can happen before the next game. We do all that we can to move things in the right direction on this level.
"It will not be possible (the season) with such a small squad. That is why we are searching for new players, we need new players. But we do not just do it in a hurry, we need to do it with brains and patience. Of course, we need new players because we cannot play in the Championship (with 15 senior players) with the 46 games.
"We need some guys very quickly, but we still need the right feeling when we sign with someone. We will see how well we can do this, to keep the patience and also hurry up."
It’s a big positive that Sheffield Wednesday can recruit players in any shape or form, with the squad being stretched to breaking point after their opening weekend defeat at Leicester.
In terms of the players already mentioned, it would be a great blend of youth and experience.
Wednesday need as much second-tier knowhow as possible in the backline, and with Cooper and Mee offering a combined 356 appearances in the Championship, those are two players that could be vital to keeping goalmouth action at their own end to a minimum.
Meanwhile, the likes of Harry Amass and Toby Collyer are talented individuals and have great chances of making it to the top of the English game.
They just need the experience lower down the divisions, and if they can both hit the ground running straight away, then the club has a duo that can be called upon for the majority of their demanding schedule.
There’s finally some optimism to feel for Sheffield Wednesday, with this transfer embargo lift appearing vital to aiding their efforts to survive in the Championship this season.
