Sheffield Wednesday defender Reece James has claimed that the belief manager Darren Moore can instill in players is “massive” and predicted things will only get better for the League One club as the season continues.

The pair worked together at Doncaster Rovers and were reunited at Hillsborough this summer with James joining on loan from Blackpool for the 2021/22 campaign.

Despite an early hiccup, which saw the 28-year-old sent off in the 2-0 defeat to Peterborough United, signing the defender has proven a smart move for Wednesday.

He’s quickly established himself as a regular in Moore’s starting XIs and now looks a likely candidate to drop into the back three after Mark McGuinness’ injury.

James enjoyed surely the best two-season spell of his career under the Owls boss at Doncaster – scoring nine times and providing six assists as a left-back and occasional defensive midfielder – and he’s outlined why he enjoys his management so much.

He told Yorkshire Live: “The belief he can give you as a player is massive.

“For me, I worked with him at Doncaster and he was great in the way I recovered to have one of the best seasons in my career.

“A lot of that came from the development he did in a season in the way he wanted us to play as a team. It was enjoyable to play in.”

Wednesday sit fourth in League One after nine games, four points back from the top two, but James believes that they’re only going to improve as the season wears on.

He explained: “At times, this season, we have played some unbelievable football. I think that can only get better as things click more as a team and the more work we do on it.”

The Verdict

It’s useful to get this sort of insight into what makes Moore such a good manager and supporters will no doubt love to hear about the belief he instills in his players.

We saw the dividends of that in their strong late-season run in 2021/22 and the Wednesday boss will be hoping that it can help them secure promotion back to the Championship this term.

James, who is clearly a player that the manager has a huge amount of trust in, looks as though he could play an important role in that push.

Moore has made the most of his versatility in the past and may look to do the same by dropping him into the back three against Wycombe.
