Sheffield United have signed promising young defender Charlotte Wardlaw from Chelsea on a season-long loan deal.
The 21-year-old joined the Chelsea academy as a 15-year-old and made her senior debut in a Continental League Cup match at 16, going on to several more appearances before signing a professional deal in 2021.
The centre-back, who can also play as a full-back, was loaned to Liverpool and played a key role in the team’s Championship-winning campaign.
Wardlaw joined Liverpool on a second loan in the WSL before another temporary move to Lewes in 2023, where she stayed until joining Glasgow City whom she represented during the 2023-24 season.
A former England youth team player, Wardlaw captained the young Lionesses up to U-19 level, also making several appearances for the U-23s.
Wardlaw said: “I’m really excited and delighted to be here. I think it’s really good to be back in the Championship and back at this club and hopefully push and develop me as a player and as a person.”
Head coach Ash Thompson commented: “We’re really happy to get Charlotte in. She’s already proven at this level, has played at the top level in Scotland and obviously had a great upbringing at one of the biggest clubs in the country.
“She’s confident on the ball but solid defensively and we think she’ll be a really valuable addition for us moving forward this season.”
