Sheffield United are considering a transfer move for Luton Town's Tahith Chong ahead of the transfer deadline on Monday.
Sheffield United are interested in Luton Town’s Tahith Chong as they look to strengthen Ruben Selles’ squad ahead of the 7pm deadline on Monday.
The Blades have endured a torrid start to the Championship campaign, with the new boss suffering three successive defeats in the league since his appointment.
Therefore, there has been a focus on bringing in reinforcements, with Japhet Tanganga joining from Millwall in a move that will instantly improve the defence.
But, other areas need addressing, and it appears the Yorkshire side are looking to add a new midfielder to the ranks.
That’s after the Sheffield Star revealed the Blades have an interest in Chong ahead of the deadline, although it’s unclear whether they will act on that interest.
The update explains that the 25-year-old’s ability to play in midfield or a wider role appeals, and Hatters boss Matt Bloomfield has admitted previously that there is a possibility Chong could depart following back-to-back relegations for the club.
Chong is yet to feature for Luton in League One this season, as he has been recovering from a groin injury that has prevented him from playing a pre-season game.
There’s no denying that Sheffield United need to make some new signings, as the squad is lacking both star quality and depth, so Chong would undoubtedly help the group.
Whilst his form with Luton has been inconsistent, it’s worth noting that he was one of the players who did well in the Premier League, so the talent is there.
Chong would bring drive and the ability to carry the ball for a Blades squad that has been somewhat predictable in the opening few weeks, and the fact he can play in a few positions is another positive.
So, this would appear to be a decent signing if Sheffield United can get it over the line, but it obviously needs to make sense from a financial perspective.
After a slow start to the window, the club have recognised the need to back Selles, and the signing of Tanganga in particular is a statement of intent given the money they have paid.
But, if the Blades are to win promotion, which has to be the aim, then they need to make more additions over the coming days, and you can be sure that Selles is pushing to get new faces through the door.
