Sheffield United are keen to ensure they can compete in the Championship and under Paul Heckingbottom, the club are determined to do some astute transfer business this month – and two targets linked with the Blades by Mail Online are Nat Phillips and Rhys Williams of Liverpool.

The club are currently in eleventh place in the standings and they’ll feel that a few more points on the board and the right additions this month could help them push towards the play-offs in the second half of the campaign.

One area that the Blades are looking to add to is in defence and it appears as though they could be eyeing a swoop on Premier League side Liverpool for reinforcements to their backline.

According to Mail Online, both Rhys Williams and Nat Phillips have been looked at by the club – and whilst there is no official bid on the table for either of those two yet, there is still time to do business before the window closes.

The latter of the two has only just returned to Anfield from the Championship, having had a rather unsuccessful loan spell with Swansea in the first half of the campaign. He wasn’t able to get on the field too much and after only a handful of showings, he has been recalled by the Reds.

Nat Phillips has featured fairly regularly for both Liverpool and then on loan at VFB Stuttgart but is not being used too often by the Reds this season. With all of their defenders back fit, there is no need to throw the centre-back into the mix too often at Anfield now.

It means that both could be available on short-term deals for the rest of the campaign – and it looks like Sheffield United could be willing to offer one of them a chance to go and ply their trade at Bramall Lane.

Either of the defenders signing for Sheffield United would be a solid addition to the club’s backline for the rest of the season.

The two of them have more than enough experience to be able to offer a decent option to the Blades at the back and it could really help the club to kick on in the next part of the campaign. Newcastle though have been linked with Phillips – and a permanent move may appeal more both parties in that respect – so Williams may be the more likely signing.

Both of them could also do with the extra playing time. Williams couldn’t get it on loan at Swansea but may find it easier to get on the field for Sheffield United, while Phillips isn’t being used by the Reds and a move anywhere else could vastly help him out.

Heckingbottom though is looking in the right areas for new signings. If either of those were to agree a short-term deal, then it would be a good bit of business by the Championship side.
