Sheffield United have completed the signing of defender Sophie O’Rourke on a free transfer.

WSL Full-Time were informed of the news via an official club press release from The Blades earlier today.

The 26-year-old joins Sheffield United after leaving former club Charlton Athletic earlier this summer. O’Rourke spent three years with The Addicks, helping the club challenge towards the top end of the Barclays WSL2 table. In total, O’Rourke made 39 appearances for Charlton Athletic in all competitions  during her time in South East London.

The defender has also turned out for Reading, Icelandic club Grindavik and Lewes in her career to date. She has spent the last seven years operating at Barclays WSL2 level.

After adding O’Rourke to his squad, Sheffield United head coach Ash Thompson said “Sophie adds more experience, quality and depth in our defence and a position we were still keen to bring someone in ahead of the new season. She’s been a constant presence in this league since day one which is important with us having a young squad in places, and I’ve no doubt she’ll bring really good competition to the backline, so we’re delighted to bring her in.”

Further Sheffield United squad news will be revealed in due course.
