Sheffield United travel to the Riverside Stadium on Saturday still searching for their first points of the campaign, though recent history offers little encouragement.

The Blades have picked up just a single point from their last six visits to Middlesbrough, a record Ruben Selles’ side will be desperate to improve upon.

One source of optimism comes in the form of new signing Danny Ings. The former England international, who was linked with a move to Middlesbrough earlier in the summer, has instead penned a one-year deal with United, with the option of an additional year.

Middlesbrough have started the season in commanding fashion, sitting second in the table and only behind Stoke City on goal difference. Their numbers thus far suggest that Rob Edwards’ men have been clinical in the final third and tight at the back.

Boro have received a boost with captain Darragh Lenihan edging closer to a return after missing the entirety of last season. Edwards confirmed last week that the defender has resumed training, though this fixture may come too soon. Riley McGree is also on the mend but will not be rushed back into action, per Gazzette Live.

The hosts do have fresh reinforcement, however, with left-back Matt Targett joining on loan from Newcastle United, adding a proven Premier League full-back to their already solid defensive unit.

For United, Tom Davies, Jamie Shackleton and Oliver Arblaster will all likely be available after the upcoming international break.
