Red Star Belgrade star Seol Young-woo is firmly on the radar of the Blades
Sheffield United are interested in signing South Korea international full-back Seol Young-woo this summer to bolster their right-back position.
The Blades are yet to make a real splash in the transfer window, with FLW exclusively revealing earlier on in the summer that new head coach Ruben Selles would have to work with a restricted budget based on freebies and loan deals - the trio of Louie Barry, Tyler Bindon and Djibril Soumare have all arrived on a temporary basis.
However, with the sale of Anel Ahmedhodzic to Feyenoord for £7 million, it may have unlocked some fresh funds for the Spaniard and his recruitment team to play with - and somewhat of a problem position for United is being targeted along with a new centre-back.
The right-back area of the pitch for Sheffield United is one that plenty of players had a go at filling last season under Chris Wilder, but there was no real consistent figure in that role.
Chelsea's Alfie Gilchrist was signed on loan for the 2024-25 season in that area, but an ankle injury meant he became a peripheral figure in the second half of the season, leaving the likes of January signings Hamza Choudhury and Harry Clarke, as well as Femi Seriki to fill the void.
Selles is looking for a permanent solution to that problem though, and as per the Sheffield Star, Red Star Belgrade's Seol Young-woo is a player of interest.
The 26-year-old, who has been capped 26 times for the South Korea national team, signed for the Serbian outfit last summer from Ulsan Hyundai in his home country, and he proved to be an asset at the top end of the pitch with six goals and eight assists in the Super liga Srbije and the UEFA Champions League.
Now, United are keen to bring the full-back - who can play on both the right-hand side and the left - to Bramall Lane, but despite claims in Serbia that they were willing to pay an initial €3 million for his services, the Star have claimed that Red Star are holding out for his €5 million release clause to be triggered for any potential deal to go through.
It now remains to be seen as to whether United make their move for the versatile defender, but they are in a stronger position to do a deal now thanks to Ahmedhodzic's departure.
Whilst Femi Seriki is more-than good enough to be a Championship right back, the pressure will be on him to perform to a higher standard if he were to be a regular starter under Ruben Selles this season.
Regardless, Seriki needs some competition in that area of the pitch, and Young-woo is a player who has UEFA Champions League experience under his belt, even registering an assist against Spanish giants Barcelona last season.
A move to United could give Young-woo a good potential platform into the Premier League, and at the age of 26 he's approaching his theoretical peak years - this could be a smart deal for Sheffield United if they execute it.
