Sheffield United defender Charlotte Newsham will spend at least eight weeks on the sidelines recovering from an ankle injury, the club have confirmed.

The 21-year-old Scot joined The Blades in the summer from their FA Women’s Championship rivals Blackburn Rovers and the player has gone on to appear in 12 of Sheffield United’s 13 matches in the second tier this season.

Newsham was a notable absentee as Sheffield United battled to a 1-1 draw with Durham at Maiden Castle on Sunday and the South Yorkshire club have today confirmed that the defender is recovering from rupturing ligaments in her ankle. The injury was sustained during Sheffield United’s 3-1 victory over Coventry United 10 days’ ago and the player will now spend at least eight weeks on the sidelines.

News of Newsham’s injury comes as a real blow for Sheffield United with the club having made a really positive start to 2022. Four points taken from an available six have helped strengthen The Blades’ claims for a top half of the table finish this season.

Newsham seems likely to miss Sheffield United’s next four or five fixtures in the FA Women’s Championship along with any upcoming ties in the Vitality Women’s FA Cup. The Blades continue their adventure in that competition this weekend when West Ham United visit The Technique Stadium for a fourth round tie.
