The Blades are preparing for life back in the Championship after what was a horrendous season in the Premier League.

The Yorkshire side will be one of the favourites to seal promotion back to the top flight, but to do so, manager Chris Wilder is likely going to have to ring the changes in the playing squad to get a side ready to compete at the top of the table.

It hasn’t been made clear what resources are going to be available to the Sheffield United manager as of yet, but it seems he is keen to bring in some fresh faces.

One player the Blades look interested in signing is Lawrence from Rangers, a player who isn’t unknown to English football after his time with Derby County. But as well as the Yorkshire side being interested in the player, the club also faces stiff competition from Ipswich Town.

Sheffield United have already made significant changes to their squad in the early weeks of the post-season, as the club has announced their retained and released list and several first-team players are leaving when their contracts expire at the end of the month.

Therefore, replacements will need to be found, and it looks as though the club has identified Tom Lawrence as one potential target.

According to the Scottish Daily Mail Paper Edition (10.06.24. PG67), Sheffield United and Ipswich Town are in the race to sign Lawrence from Rangers this summer.

The report states that both teams are looking into possibly signing the attacker this summer, but they also face competition from Turkish side Besiktas.

Lawrence is still under contract with the Scottish side until the summer of 2025, meaning he enters the final year of his deal this summer.

Ipswich’s interest may come as a surprise given that the player already has previous experience with the club, having played for them in the 2016/17 season.

Tom Lawrence’s 2023/24 stats for Rangers

Tom Lawrence joined Rangers in the summer of 2022 after several seasons with Derby County.

It has been a very up-and-down time for the player since joining the Scottish side, as he’s only played 41 times for the club in all competitions in the two seasons he has been there.

That is because injuries have hampered his playing time, mainly last season and again in the campaign just finished.

The 2023/24 season wasn’t as bad on a personal level as the previous campaign, as the 30-year-old managed to play 23 times in the league, during which he scored twice and assisted three goals.

Lawrence also played eight more times in the team’s cup competitions, and he scored one goal during that time.

It has been a very mixed time for the player since joining Rangers, and therefore, it could mean he looks to come back to England to rediscover his form.

Tom Lawrence would be a good addition for Sheffield United

Tom Lawrence is a player who has plenty of experience in English football, in particular the Championship.

The 30-year-old has shown throughout his career that he is a player who can contribute in terms of both goals and assists.

The Welshman has just finished his second season with Rangers, and it was a mixed bag for the player, as he had a few injury problems during the campaign that resulted in him being in and out of the team.

Therefore, Rangers could look to move him on with him having just 12 months left on his contract, and if that is the case, Sheffield United should be interested in a deal, as he would be a solid signing for a team in the second tier.

Lawrence can operate in central areas as well as out wide, meaning he can bring some versatility and variation to the Blades’ attack. Meanwhile, he can also score goals in the Championship, and that is something Wilder needs to add more firepower to his team.
