The Clarets and the Blades are two of three sides that have reportedly launched loan bids to recruit Lewis O'Brien.

Lewis O'Brien has a big decision to make on his future.

According to Pete O'Rourke, Burnley and Sheffield United are among the sides to have submitted an offer for the midfielder, who spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough.

O'Brien previously starred at Huddersfield Town, developing well under Carlos Corberan at the John Smith's Stadium and playing a big part in guiding the Terriers to the 2021 Championship play-off final.

Unfortunately, they were unable to win at Wembley against Nottingham Forest, who then hit Huddersfield with a double blow by signing key players O'Brien and Harry Toffolo.

O'Brien hasn't enjoyed the best time at the City Ground though, spending a decent chunk of his time at the club out on loan.

Spending time on loan at DC United and having the opportunity to ply his trade under former England international Wayne Rooney, he then made the temporary switch to Boro last summer, spending the entire campaign at the Riverside.

Injuries disrupted his time on Teesside, but this summer could give him the opportunity to make a fresh start and enjoy a positive 2024/25 campaign.

With the player only signing a long-term contract back in 2022 though, Forest may be in a strong position to demand a sizeable amount for the player and this could force clubs to either target a loan deal for him or focus on alternatives.

There isn't a shortage of interest in him at this point - with offers being made to him.

Scott Parker is hoping to make a positive start to life at Turf Moor - and will want to have as much depth at his disposal as possible to enhance his side's promotion chances.

With Jack Cork leaving on the expiration of his contract this summer, he could be a good midfield addition, although he could also play at left-back where the Clarets also require options.

Both the Clarets and the Blades have made loan offers for the Forest man, according to O'Rourke.

Chris Wilder's side may be hoping to strengthen at both left-back and in central midfield before the window closes, with another versatile player in Ben Osborn leaving Bramall Lane following the end of his contract.

O'Brien's third loan offer comes from LAFC, but it's unclear whether a move back to the United States would be appealing to the 25-year-old.

A decision on his future is expected soon.

Lewis O'Brien needs to think carefully about his future

This is a crucial time in O'Brien's career.

In hindsight, he may have benefitted from not making the move to the City Ground.

Although loan exits have given him the chance to play, he needs to settle down somewhere permanently. That would probably give him the best chance to fulfil his potential.

At 25, he needs to be starting regularly if he wants to leave a legacy, something he won't do if he doesn't manage to secure a decent amount of game time in the coming years.

A permanent exit from the City Ground at some point would be ideal, but if that's not on the table, a loan exit will be sufficient for now.
