Sevilla have sacked Jorge Sampaoli just five months into his second spell as manager and quickly named his successor on Tuesday.

Sampaoli returned to the Estadio Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán in October, having left after his debut season in 2017 to take up the reins with the Argentina national team.

But his latest stint with Los Nervionenses ended on Tuesday, just days after a 2-0 defeat at Getafe left the club languishing just two points outside LaLiga’s relegation zone in 14th place.

The club has since confirmed former Alavés, Eibar and Athletic Club coach José Luis Mendilibar will now take over.

The 62-year-old signs until 30 June, and will immediately take over the squad on Tuesday afternoon.

Throughout his career, Mendilibar has 128 wins, 125 draws, and 195 defeats and will need to whip up something special for the final part of the season as 14th-place Sevilla sit two points above relegation.
