Last season was Mohamed Salah’s least prolific while playing for Liverpool, highlighting the high expectations he has set for himself.
The forward scored only 18 goals, considered low by his usual standards. Throughout the campaign, there were questions about his long-term future at Merseyside, especially with his contract expiring in June 2025.
Salah remains and is enjoying a strong start to 2024/25, and he’s looking to expand his impressive list of accolades, records, and achievements.
Below are records the Egyptian could break and milestones he could reach this season.
Salah has been in phenomenal scoring form in the Premier League, having registered seven goals in his first ten appearances. This brings his total in England’s top division to 164 goals, allowing him to surpass both Jermain Defoe (162) and Robbie Fowler (163). He is now only 20 goals away from matching fifth-place Sergio Agüero, who is three goals behind Andy Cole, fourth on the all-time list.
He is on track to score 27 goals this season, which would position him behind only three England internationals: Wayne Rooney (208), Harry Kane (213), and Alan Shearer (260). However, if he does not sign a new contract with Liverpool, that may be where his progress stops. Even with a new contract, it would take something extraordinary for him to come close to Shearer’s record.
Salah will go down as a Liverpool legend when all is said and done, and few will dispute his place among the club’s greats. He has already broken several records while wearing a red jersey and sits fifth on the club’s all-time scorers list.
He is currently eight goals away from matching the legendary Billy Liddell’s total of 228 goals, and that milestone should be reached soon. There’s also a realistic chance of him surpassing Gordon Hodgson, who holds third place with 241 goals, as Salah is only 21 goals behind him.
That would leave him trailing only Roger Hunt (285 goals) and Ian Rush (346 goals), although it seems unlikely he will overtake Rush to claim the top spot.
Since its formation in 1992, the Premier League has gradually evolved into one of Europe’s most diverse top-flight leagues, featuring over 110 different nationalities, and more than 101 have scored.
Dwight Yorke was the first non-English player to score 100 goals, while Didier Drogba was the first African player to reach the same milestone. With 164 goals, Salah is one of three foreign players in the competition’s all-time top ten goalscorers, alongside Thierry Henry (175) and the aforementioned Sergio Agüero (184).
He’s only 20 goals behind the Argentine marksman. Salah will likely surpass Agüero as the Premier League’s highest-scoring foreign player, setting a new benchmark for those outside England to aspire to.
Salah is not just good at scoring goals; he is also a generous playmaker. In five of his previous seven Premier League seasons, he’s created over ten goals. He is currently halfway to another double-digit assist total, and if he continues this way, he could break into the competition’s all-time top ten providers list.
He is currently on 74 assists, which ties him with Ashley Young and Thierry Henry. He is within reach of Teddy Sheringham and Christian Eriksen, who both have 76 assists. While Young and Eriksen could realistically add to their totals, it is more likely that Salah will reach 81 assists and surpass David Beckham (80) to claim the tenth spot on the all-time list.
What is the definition of a “most valuable player”? It might refer to someone who can consistently score and create in the same game. Salah excels at this, having achieved it in 34 different matches in the Premier League.
This is the second-most in the competition’s history, trailing only Wayne Rooney, who holds the record with 36 matches.
Given the likelihood of Salah regularly netting in Liverpool’s remaining fixtures, he will only need to provide an assist in three games while also scoring. Therefore, it’s realistic to anticipate that this record will soon fall to the Egyptian King.
One reason why Liverpool is considered among the favourites to win this season’s Premier League is because they have a player who can impact a game in an instant. Salah only needs a moment to make a difference, whether Liverpool is dominating the match or trying to stage a comeback.
In their last match against Brighton, Salah scored his 48th match-winning goal in the Premier League, with just five players who have scored more in the competition’s history.
The record is held by Alan Shearer, who scored 68 match-winners. Currently, Liverpool has 28 matches remaining this season, which means Salah would need to achieve 21 match-winners by the end of the season. This seems unlikely, but there is still a chance, which is why we’ve included this particular achievement on our list.
Away from the Premier League, Liverpool is having a promising Champions League campaign, remaining perfect after three matches, alongside Aston Villa. Salah has already scored one goal, bringing his total to 45, with 42 of those goals coming while playing for Liverpool. This sets up an interesting prospect for him.
Salah already holds the record for the most Champions League goals for an English club, but only six players have scored 50 goals for a single club: Thomas Müller (54 – Bayern Munich), Raúl (66 – Real Madrid), Robert Lewandowski (69 – Bayern Munich), Karim Benzema (78 – Real Madrid), Cristiano Ronaldo (105 – Real Madrid), and Lionel Messi (120 – Barcelona).
He needs just eight more goals to reach this milestone, which seems achievable, as Liverpool still has five more games to play in the league stage. Progressing to the knockout phase will give Salah even more opportunities to become the first player to score 50 Champions League goals for a single English club.
