Ross Barkley – Luton to Aston Villa (£5m)

Ross Barkley’s renaissance at Luton Town was one of the stories of last season, with the midfielder arresting a career nosedive with some stellar showings for The Hatters. Barkley’s brilliance led to talk of an unlikely England recall, though was not enough to keep Luton in the Premier League.

Relegation for Rob Edwards’ side saw Luton reluctantly allow Barkley to leave, with Aston Villa offering the 30-year-old the chance to swap the Championship for the Champions League. Barkley returns to Villa after a loan spell at the club in 2020-21, though does so on the back of his best individual season since leaving Everton.

A cut-price £5m fee looks like shrewd business for Aston Villa, as Unai Emery looks to plug the gap left by Douglas Luiz’s departure for Juventus.

Renato Veiga – FC Basel to Chelsea (£12m)

Chelsea have been one of the most active clubs in the Premier League once again with five new arrivals confirmed and a further deal agreed for Estêvão Willian to link up with the club next summer.

Renato Veiga has arrived as a surprise signing from FC Basel, having impressed in a season of struggle for the Swiss side. The imposing 6ft 3in defensive midfielder is far more than an enforcer, as evidenced by a fabulous free-kick on his Basel debut that earned the club’s Goal of the Season award. The Portugal u-21 international can also operate as a centre-back or left-back and adds to the stockpile of emerging talent at Stamford Bridge.

Iliman Ndiaye – Marseille to Everton (£15m)

Sheffield United were forced to cash in on Iliman Ndiaye last summer and the midfielder’s departure contributed to a miserable Premier League return. A year later, Ndiaye returns to English football at Everton after completing a £15m move to Merseyside.

The 24-year-old’s move to Marseille failed to work out as hoped but Everton are confident the Senegal international can inject creative quality into their ranks. Ndiaye starred as Sheffield United won promotion from the Championship in 2022-23 with 14 goals and 10 assists, while he has earned 20 caps at international level.

After a season of progression in tough circumstances last term, Ndiaye joins an Everton team looking to build under Sean Dyche.

Liam Delap – Manchester City to Ipswich Town (£15m)

Ipswich Town have wasted no time in investing in their squad this summer with the club’s four most expensive signings all arriving at Portman Road in recent weeks. Liam Delap has joined from Manchester City for an initial fee of £15m, as the England u-21 international looks to fulfil his potential away from the Etihad.

A prolific presence at youth level, Delap was named Premier League 2 Player of the Season in 2020-21 after scoring 24 goals and marked his senior Manchester City debut with a goal that season. Last term, he scored eight goals in 31 Championship appearances for Hull.

Nikola Milenkovic – Fiorentina to Nottingham Forest (£12m)

Nottingham Forest have completed a coup with the signing of Nikola Milenkovic from Fiorentina for £12m.

The Serbian centre-back has been regularly linked with the Premier League’s top teams in recent windows, having formed part of the Fiorentina team that reached consecutive Europa Conference League finals.

Milenkovic is a towering presence at 6ft 5in and has won 56 caps for Serbia, including playing every minute of his country’s Euro 2024 campaign this summer.

Ronnie Edwards – Peterborough to Southampton (£3m)

Southampton have secured the services of Ronnie Edwards from Peterborough for a fee of £3m. The 21-year-old featured 45 times for the third-tier side last season as The Posh won the EFL Trophy, and has captained England at u-20 level.

Peterborough chairman Darragh MacAnthony believes his side would have got £15m for the highly-rated youngster, if he were taller.

“It’s a modern day miracle for a club in League One to have kept hold of a player of Ronnie’s ability for four years,” MacAnthony told his club’s subscription service. “And I’m happy with the fee because I am confident we will do fantastically well financially as Ronnie’s career develops.

“I’d rather sell players when we are in the Championship than in League One because they will go for more and believe me Ronnie would have gone for five times as much had he been 6ft 3in as Premier League clubs are obsessed with height. I will chuckle to myself in three years when Ronnie has proved himself. Southampton manager Russell Martin is intelligent enough to play Ronnie and he is ready for the Premier League.”

Jørgen Strand Larsen – Celta Vigo to Wolves (loan)

Wolves’ search for centre-forward presence has landed at Jørgen Strand Larsen, with the Norwegian joining on loan from Celta Vigo with an obligation to buy for €30m. After underwhelming deals for Fabio Silva and Sasa Kalajdzic in recent windows, Wolves will hope Strand Larsen is the perfect focal point.

The 24-year-old scored 13 league goals in La Liga last season and ranked third in Spain’s top division for xG and non-penalty xG in 2023-24. Each of his 13 goals came from open play and, at 6ft 4in, the forward appears to be tailor-made for the demands of English football.
