Manchester United are prepared to allow Phil Jones to leave on a free transfer this summer with seven Premier League sides ‘keeping tabs’ on the defender.

Jones has not featured for the Red Devils since scoring in a 6-0 win over Tranmere in January 2020, with the centre-back having missed the entirety of the 2020/21 campaign.

The 29-year-old has been ravaged with injury problems throughout his time at Old Trafford and has made just two league appearances over the past two campaigns, including the long-term knee injury that prevented him featuring last season.

According to 90min, the 27-cap England international has now been deemed surplus to requirements with the imminent arrival of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid set to push the defender further down the pecking order.

United’s desire to sell Jones has been hindered by the player’s lucrative contract worth in excess of £100,000-a-week, a deal that still has two years to run and is unlikely to be matched by any prospective suitor.

Interested clubs are also unwilling to give up one of two loan spaces in their squad for an injury-prone player, raising the prospect of United allowing Jones to depart for free, though the Red Devils may need to cover some of his wages.

Newcastle are believed to be interested in bringing the player to St James’ Park, whilst Everton, Southampton, West Ham, Brighton, Burnley and Crystal Palace have also been named as sides who would be potentially interested.
