In Igor Matanovic, Can Uzun, Nathaniel Brown, Rasmus Kristensen and Aurèle Amenda, Eintracht named five new arrivals in their starting XI against the fourth-division side. Defender Willian Pacho, however, was not in the squad as he is currently in talks over a move to another club.

Excitement at both ends

Omar Marmoush went close to giving the Eagles an early lead when his shot from a tight angle was saved by FSV goalkeeper Henry Bremer, but the floodgates soon opened in Bornheim. Tuta headed Eintracht ahead from close range after Marmoush’s free-kick was parried by Bremer, and the Egyptian doubled their advantage two minutes later after fine work from Uzun. Matanovic picked up where he left off against Louisville last week with a composed, close-range finish to make it 3-0, before the 21-year-old picked out Brown for Eintracht’s fourth shortly before the break.

FSV gave their fans something to cheer about just before the hour mark when Sho Sannomiya fired high past Kevin Trapp from inside the penalty area. Gigi Iorga made it 4-2 midway through the second half, but Matanovic’s powerful header moments later halted the home side’s momentum and handed the Eagles their second victory of the day, following a 4-1 victory over fourth-tier outfit TSV Steinbach Haiger on the Deutsche Bank Park training pitch earlier on Wednesday. “The first half was really good with a lot of interceptions high up the pitch, good pressing and nice goals,” head coach Dino Toppmöller said afterwards. “I didn't like the first 20 minutes of the second half as much. Despite taking off Rasmus Kristensen and then Robin Koch, we shouldn’t have conceded those two goals. We also could have scored more goals ourselves. What remains positive is how keen the boys are to play football, and they’re also getting better and better without the ball. Saturday’s game against Valencia is a yardstick for us.”
